Obituary for Alvin Cross

Mr. Alvin Cross was born on September 3, 1939, to Porter
and Gertrude King Cross, in Jacksonville, Florida. He
attended the local schools, and after high school, he
traveled the world as a Merchant Mariner for twenty-two
years. He then became a Long Shoreman with ILA Local
1408 for eleven years.
Alvin was preceded in death by his father and mother;
brothers, Porter, Jr., and Isaac Cross; sisters, Juanita
Palmer, Ester Backman and Betty Kelly.
In 1965, he met and married the love of his life, Paytie
Pinkney. From this union of 53 years, two children were
born: Sonja Cross-Baptiste and Mia A. Cross. Added to the
family are a son, Alvin Cross, Jr. (Robin), and a son-in-law,
Martin Baptiste.
Left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Lorenzo Cross
(Olivia), Roosevelt Cross (Selena) and Clarence Cross
(Judy); sisters-in-law, Johnnie P. Mathews and Gloria
Hubbard; brother-in-law, Sam Holman (Lou); aunt, Fannie
Pinkney, Cairo, GA; grandchildren, LaToya Neal (Ledric),
Martin Baptiste, Jr. (Marie) and Brooks Baptiste; great
grands; cousins, Earnestine Harding (Sampson), Clinton,
MD, and Joan Owens (Sam); nieces and nephews; many
loving friends, to include Curlie and Inez Johnson,
Lexington, SC; his Mt. Bethel family, and the professional
staff at Lakeside Nursing and Rehab Center.
