Dorothy Alston Newson Hill was born in Mobile. AL, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Martha Alston, Sr. She was reared in a home filled with love from her parents and her siblings. Upon graduation from Theodore High School, Dorothy matriculated to Alabama State College and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Moving to the Miami area in South Florida, she eventually became a dedicated employee with the Merrill-Lynch Corporation where her skills enabled her to receive several promotions during her tenure.
She met and married the late Leroy Benny Newson, Sr., and to this union was born two beloved children, Leroy Benny Newson, Jr, and Leonard Newson.
Wherever she lived, Dorothy made sure to connect with a local church where she could fellowship and worship her Lord and Savior. A committed Christian, she was ever active as a teacher, friend and confident. Inasmuch as the church was also a partner in the Florida General Baptist Convention, Dorothy was able to fellowship with the other local churches and when the statewide churches would converge in state assemblies.
Dorothy met Richard Hill, Jr, in Jacksonville, FL, when he served as a bus driver for delegates from other Florida cities needing transportation to the different meetings being held in Jacksonville. They eventually married and became a blended family until he passed away. Prior to his death she joined Mt. Bethel Baptist Church and served on District #9 and the Missionary Society. Temporary employment was found with the Mayo Clinic which quickly became a permanent position that lasted until her retirement.
She later became a member of First Timothy Baptist Church, and served faithfully in several ministries, including Sunday School (Teacher), Bags of Love, the We Care Ministry and the N Christ 4 Life Ministry. She was known for her delicious sweet potato pies that were shared on special occasions.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Martha Alston, Sr.; and siblings, Inez White, Robert Alston, Loubornie Alston, Lloyd Alston, Arthur Lee Auston, and Clearthur Alston.
