Obituary for John Wesley Stephens Sr.

John Wesley Stephens was born and reared in Jacksonville, FL. His youth was full of triumphs in his community. Among his childhood friends he was known as “Kango.” John had fond memories of family with his parents, Mary and Willie Stephens, who preceded him in death. John was a member of New United Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Tony Neal III.

Throughout the years, he had enjoyed friends and family, and experienced hard life lessons. But in the later years of his new life, John “Kango” found the true meanings of family, life, friendship, a loving relationship, the responsibility of belonging and being loved. He learned to enjoy vacations, cruises and amusement parks that he had only dreamed of. In his words, “I didn’t know; I went to places that I wouldn’t have seen in this life without Lillian Thomas (the dearest love of his life)” They were together to the end. And Kango also expressed his appreciation for the love from his extended family.

On December 31, 2019, John Wesley Stephen was surrounded by the Thomas Family as they covered him with love until the end.
