Life Story for Lettie Leon Russ

Lettie Leon Russ
Sister Lettie Leon Russ was born on September 28, 1928, in Tallahassee, FL, the second of three and the only daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie and Hannah Rawlins Leon. Her early education was received through the Leon County Schools. Upon moving to Jacksonville, FL, the family began attending Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church where Lettie received Christ and was baptized. She completed her education at the Davis Street High School.

For over 20 years, Sister Russ was employed as a Doctor’s Assistant with the Urology practice of Dr. Browning and Dr. Jones. She always had a pleasant and positive word for everyone she met. She loved flowers, gardening, decorating and making ceramics. Most of all she loved family, and enjoyed preparing special meals for her grandchildren.

Sister Russ became a member of Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. S.A. Thomas, Jr., and was placed on District #8, Deacon Clarence Griffin, Leader. The District is now led by Deacon William Thomas, with Deacon Dwayne Jackson as Assistant. She became a part of the Welcoming Committee, and will be remembered for her joyful, loving and spiritual exuberance that made visitors feel the Spirit of the Lord as they worshiped with Mt. Bethel. Many times the welcome became a testimony of the goodness of God. She was later inducted into the Mother’s Board, where she served faithfully until her health failed.

Mother Lettie Russ finished her work on earth on last Saturday, and was called home to rest from her labor. Servant of God, well done, well done. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Leon; stepmother, Mrs. Lucille Leon; brothers, Robert Leon, Sr. and Willie Leon, Sr.; and son-in-law, James Perkins.

Her legacy will be cherished by her children, Carol Perkins, Erma Denson (Alex Radford) and Alice G. Toledo (Rolando); grandchildren, Charles Gillyard, James Duron Dorsey (Laura), Travis Denson (Sybil), Fred R. Denson (Concetta) and Latoya Russ; a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, to include Rev. Theresa L. Givens, nephews, to include Dea. Robert Leon, Jr. (Lashon), other relatives and friends. Farewell, dear Mother. We’ll see you in the morning.
