Obituary for Mother Joan C Barney

A baby girl was added to the Crawford family at the beginning of the new year of 1934. On January 2, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie and Bessie Mitchell Crawford were blessed with the arrival of their third child, Joan, in High Point, North Carolina. When Joan was 12 years of age, her mother passed away, and four years later, her father also passed away. Still a teenager, Joan moved to New York to live with her sister, Dorothy Washington.

It was in New York where she met and fell in love with a young man from Florida, Samuel Barney, Jr. They returned to his home in Jacksonville, Florida, and were married on July 8, 1961, in the home of his sister, Ruby. She joined Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, the Barney family church at that time, under the pastorate of Rev. B. W. Williams. Joan quickly went to work singing in the church choir on Sunday and teaching during the week in the church’s kindergarten. With a quest to further her education, she earned her G.E.D., and continued further personal studying throughout her life.

In 1964, Mother Joan felt the call to become a part of the ministry at Faust Temple Church of God in Christ, under the pastorate of Elder W.F. Faust, Sr. She served joyfully and faithfully wherever she was assigned, and was an encouraging light to so many during her earthly tenure. She was a Sunday School teacher for junior high age children, sang in choir #3 and later with the Silverettes, and she was a leader for the YWCC. She became Jacksonville District Jurisdiction Missionary Emeritus after having served actively for many years. Never idle, she remained involved in the church activities until her health declined.

Although she had changed her membership, she continued to support her beloved husband, Dea. Barney, in his activities at Mt. Bethel. After serving years as an insurance agent for Atlanta Life, retirement afforded her the opportunity to become Coordinator of COJ Site 21 - the Moncrief Seniors Center, where her love of people was evident. That love radiated to others wherever she was present.

On July 7, 2020, one day before the anniversary of her marriage, Mother Joan Crawford Barney’s earthly work was completed, and she was translated to her eternal home to ever be with the Lord. She was preceded by her loving husband, her parents, and her siblings: Dorothy Washington and Nathaniel Crawford.

Left to cherish precious memories are her daughter, Donna Marie Blue (Joe); adopted children, Samone Hinson Smith (Walter Jr.) and Dorian Hinson; niece, Antoinette Washington, Anaheim, CA; grands, multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and her church family.

“Servant of God, well done! Rest from thy loved employ! The battle fought, the victory won, Enter thy Master's joy.”
