Another memorable event occurred that year when she became the wife of her beloved William E. Young on September 5, 1952. They celebrated 65 years together until he passed away in October 2017, and were blessed with four children: Deborah Y. Sanders (Thomas), both deceased, Rev. Dorcas Y. Jackson, Anthony Young (Mary) and Andrew Young, Sr.; four adult grandchildren, Eugene ( Alianna), Stephanie (Jimmy), Warren and Andrew,Jr.; and three great grands, Jimmie, Jameson and William (Liam). There is a multitude of cousins, nieces and nephews, along with her church family.
A lifelong member of St. Stephen, Sister Young has been active from her childhood, when she was a Junior Usher. She served for over 40 years as a dedicated, unselfish, outstanding and faithful member of Usher Board #1. From the 1980’s until 2001, she was Supervisor of the Junior Usher Board, and for many years sewed the children’s usher uniforms. For a time, she also was Director for the Young People’s Department.
For more than eight years until 1996, Sister Young was President of the Catherine Dawson Women’s Missionary Society. She also served as an officer in the East Florida Conference in 1996, and was selected be a delegate to the Conventional Quad Annual. In May 2001, she graduated from Truth Bible College with an Associate Degree in Biblical Studies. In 2004 she was ordained as a local Deacon. She was active in the Evangelism Explosion, the Soul and Body Luncheons, as well as the Senior Adult and Marriage Ministries. For decades she served as Coordinator for the St. Stephen Prison Ministry to the Women’s Mongermory Correctional Facility through the Jacksonville Police Department.
Sister Young retired from State Farm Insurance Company after 20 years of service. There, she had participated with the Toastmasters Club. In the 1970s she was an officer at Northwestern Middle School, where she encouraged a program to recognize the children for perfect attendance and academic achievements. She also helped campaign for two pastors who were elected Bishops: The Right Reverend Robert Webster (1992) and Reverend Michael Mitchell (2016). She was an officer in the Beacon Light Chapter 133, O.E.S.
This great lady of God will be missed by many people whose lives she touched, mentored and encouraged to endeavor to be their best selves for the glory of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
